Oral Health Behaviors and Dental Care Utilization by Dental Fear Level of Elementary School Students in Gangwon Province

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship of oral health behaviors and dental care utilization on dental fear level of local elementary school students in Gangwon province. We identified the characteristics of dental fear on elementary school students, and analysed the relevant factors. Total 446, including 234 males and 212 females, the fifth grade elementary school students in Gangwon province participated in this survey. The frequency analysis and chi-quare
test were conducted to analyze the data. The fear about tooth decay treatment was 57.0% of the total study subjects and the fear about dental prophylaxis was 26.8%. In terms of gender, female students showed higher level of fear than male ones (p<0.05). The students, who do not have the fear about dental prophylaxis tend to seek more oral examinations (p<0.05). Students with fear on tooth decay treatment showed a tendency to consume less snacks (p<0.05). Based on our data, it is necessary to study for seeking alternatives to reduce dental fear of elementary school students.
